The Tamil Nadu government has informed the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court that it has filed an appeal before the Supreme Court in the Thiruparankundram matter.

The case traces back to a petition filed by Ezhumalai Ram Ravikumar and others. On December 1, 2025, Justice G.R. Swaminathan had directed that Karthigai Deepam be lit at the Deepa Thoon on Thiruparankundram hill, apart from the usual locations.

Subsequently, contempt proceedings were initiated alleging non-compliance with the direction, and appeals were filed challenging orders passed in the contempt case. The High Court’s Madurai Bench had earlier asked the state government to state its position.

When the matter came up again on June 22 before a division bench of Justices Satish Kumar and Jothi Raman, the government said it has appealed to the Supreme Court against the judges’ order requiring the lamp to be lit. The bench adjourned the hearing.
