UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation, as discontent within the ruling Labour Party intensified over recent weeks.
Starmer, who became prime minister two years ago, had repeatedly rejected calls from within the party to step down. However, internal pressure continued to build.
The turning point came after by-elections were held in three constituencies. In the Makerfield by-election, senior Labour figure and Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham contested and won by a large margin, boosting morale among party members.
Following the result, several Labour leaders who were unhappy with Starmer publicly indicated that Burnham should take over the party leadership. With support waning, Starmer announced his resignation, and Burnham confirmed he will run for the leadership.
Burnham has previously lost twice in Labour leadership contests, but British political analysts cited in reports say he is now seen as a strong contender for both the party leadership and the premiership.
