Reports indicate the Tamil Nadu government is considering keeping the proposed Parandur airport project on hold while examining plans to build new integrated “green” airports in the state’s second-tier cities, including Tiruchirappalli and Madurai.
The earlier DMK government had planned Chennai’s second airport at Parandur in Kancheepuram district across about 5,600 acres. Land acquisition had begun for around 3,700 acres of private land, and about 1,700 acres of agricultural land has reportedly been acquired so far.
After the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) formed the government, attention has reportedly shifted. Vijay had earlier opposed acquiring farmland for the Parandur project, and the latest discussions are said to be focused on alternative airport development in other cities.
Aviation and economic experts have expressed concern, arguing that Parandur is critical as Chennai airport is nearing peak capacity and the project is needed to position Chennai as a major international business hub. They said growth in second-tier cities is important, but it should not become a substitute for strengthening the capital’s infrastructure.
Experts also cautioned that any prolonged slowdown could create negative perceptions among investors and international airlines that typically plan around a state’s capital. They urged the government to clarify how it will balance Chennai’s economic needs with the demand for a world-class airport, and to issue a clear statement to avoid confusion.
