Petitions submitted to Collector

Residents from the Pira settlement at Sathyapuram in Sevur, near Katpadi in Vellore district, submitted petitions to the District Collector over a dispute linked to the local Ram Venkatesa Perumal and Mariamman temple.

Allegation of obstruction and threats

A group identifying as Hindu Pira residents said around 60 people live in the settlement, including nine families who have embraced Christianity and 51 Hindu families. They claimed the temple has been in use for worship for decades, and alleged that attempts to renovate or rebuild it are being obstructed through arguments, video recording and repeated complaints to the police. They also alleged threats and said restrictions were being raised during festival time, including objections to songs and dramas.

Counter-claim of discrimination

In a separate petition, another group from the same community said they were being labelled as converts because they did not take part in cleaning the temple. They alleged they were being socially excluded, including being told others should not attend their family functions, and described it as a human rights violation.

Collector assures action

The Collector received petitions from both sides and said appropriate action would be taken, according to those who submitted the complaints.
