Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the funeral rites of former supreme leader Ali Khamenei, according to reports from Tehran.

Ali Khamenei was killed on February 28 during the US–Israel war against Iran. With the conflict continuing after his death, Iran faced difficulties in conducting the funeral ceremonies, and plans to hold them in March were postponed.

Iran has now announced that the funeral rites will be held from July 4 to July 9, with several world leaders expected to attend. The ceremonies are set to begin on July 4.

On July 4, state honours will be accorded at a ceremony at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla complex, where Khamenei’s body will be kept for public viewing. A large procession is also being planned in Tehran.

Special prayers are to be arranged in Najaf and Karbala, and the burial is scheduled for July 9 at a shrine in Mashhad, Khamenei’s hometown in northeastern Iran.
