Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay spoke for over an hour in the Assembly on Monday while replying to the debate on the Governor’s address.

As he concluded, Vijay sought the Speaker’s permission to make a gesture, remarking that he felt like doing it if DMK MLAs had been present, but that they had already left. Speaker JCD Prabhakar allowed him to proceed.

Vijay then made a hand sign indicating “finished”, similar to a gesture earlier used by DMK leader M.K. Stalin during the Assembly election period after the DMK–Congress alliance was finalised. Members from the TVK side welcomed it by thumping desks.

DMK MLAs strongly objected to Vijay’s gesture. Responding to reporters on Tuesday, Speaker Prabhakar said the Chief Minister’s “finishing” gesture did not breach the House’s dignity or traditions, and that nothing improper occurred in the Assembly.
