Madurai: The word “Tamil Nadu”, which had been removed from the front panels of state transport corporation buses, has now been reinstated on government CNG (compressed natural gas) buses, following a recent government order.

Tamil Nadu has eight state-run transport corporations. Except for the Chennai Metropolitan Transport Corporation and the State Express Transport Corporation, buses operated by the other six corporations traditionally carried the wording “Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation” on the front.

During the DMK regime, the word “Tamil Nadu” was dropped and the buses were marked only as the government transport corporation. Despite objections from various quarters, the change continued.

Transport corporation officials said the government issued instructions last week to add “Tamil Nadu” on government CNG buses, but no order has been received yet on extending the change to other government buses.

Trade union representatives welcomed the move and urged that the name be restored across all transport corporation buses, saying it would help provide a distinct identity for buses travelling to other states and reduce confusion.
