Bhopal: Opposition parties in Madhya Pradesh have alleged that Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s family accumulated large tracts of land in and around Ujjain in areas linked to major road and infrastructure plans. The opposition has sought an inquiry into purchases said to be worth about Rs 45 crore.

The allegations come in the backdrop of the “Ujjain Master Plan”, released a few months before Yadav took charge as chief minister in 2023. Under the plan, the government permitted conversion of agricultural land for commercial and residential use.

According to the claims, since Yadav became chief minister, his family members and four real-estate firms linked to them bought 137 land parcels totalling 168 acres in Ujjain and nearby areas. Of this, 111 acres are said to be located very close to government-announced road infrastructure projects, which the opposition says led to sharp increases in land value.

The land purchases are alleged to involve the chief minister’s wife Seema Yadav, daughter-in-law Shalini Yadav, his brothers Nandlal and Narayan Yadav, and relatives Govind and Neelesh Yadav. The Congress has also questioned how the family’s landholding rose from about 100 acres earlier to 335 acres now, and demanded accountability.

Other opposition parties have also called for Mohan Yadav to step down. However, unnamed government officials have rejected the allegations, and a relative, Anant Yadav, said the family has been in the real-estate business since 2010 and that several deals began before Yadav became chief minister. The controversy has gained national attention ahead of the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela in Ujjain.
