Chennai witnessed an emotional moment at a government appointment ceremony when Chief Minister Vijay stepped off the stage to personally hand over an appointment order to a full-term pregnant candidate.

The event was held to distribute appointment orders to TNPSC-selected recruits—383 Assistant Engineers and 18 Assistant Accounts Officers. Officials said Vijay noticed Akshaya Lakshmi standing below the stage and walked down to present her order directly.

The gesture was widely shared online, with many praising the Chief Minister for making the effort to reach the candidate instead of calling her up to the dais.

Speaking at the function, Minister Nirmalkumar said the government planned to revive a department that had been “in decline” for 25 years and announced that 15,000 people would be recruited within a year. He added that Vijay approved the proposal to appoint 15,000 staff in the electricity board within 30 minutes.

Nirmalkumar also alleged that the power sector had weakened under the previous regime and said a white paper on the electricity department would be released the next day. He claimed that 25% of transformers currently in use were old, including units that were around 20 years old.
