A woman medical officer at an urban health centre in Katpadi, Vellore district, was arrested after she allegedly took a bribe of Rs 900 for issuing medical fitness certificates.
According to the complaint, Rangan (40) of Pallikuppam and his wife Raveena (32) have three children studying in a private school in Katpadi. Raveena approached the doctor, identified as Venkatalakshmi, on June 22 to obtain fitness certificates required for the students.
The officer allegedly demanded Rs 300 per child, totalling Rs 900 for the three children. Shocked by the demand, Raveena lodged a complaint with the Vellore vigilance and anti-corruption police.
Acting on their instructions, Raveena reportedly handed over chemically treated currency to the officer at the health centre the day before yesterday. The police, who were lying in wait, then arrested Venkatalakshmi.
