New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has asked state governments to adopt strategies to identify and destroy the infrastructure behind drug trafficking, and to take ruthless action against drug syndicates and key gangs.

Speaking at a meeting of the Narcotics coordination mechanism, Shah said India is at a critical juncture in its fight against narcotics. He warned that the next three years would be decisive in determining whether drug addiction gains ground or the country succeeds in defeating it.

He stressed that all governments must work together and involve people who guide society, the youth who shape the future, and forces that promote cleanliness and social well-being. According to him, eliminating drug trafficking requires a coordinated approach across all states, as those engaged in the drug trade remain a major obstacle.

Shah called for a tough approach towards traffickers while adopting a compassionate stance towards those affected by addiction. He urged agencies to detect drug circulation and laboratories set up for synthetic drugs, break trafficking networks, and ensure that prime accused are not let off for any reason.

Summing up the approach, he outlined three goals: “identify, assess, and destroy,” and said preparations should align with these objectives.
