Union Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday said the Modi-led government is firmly committed to fully upholding the Constitution and strengthening India’s democratic institutions.

In a statement issued on the anniversary of the 1975 Emergency, he described that period as one of the darkest chapters in India’s democratic history. He said freedom of speech and expression was curtailed, and attempts were made to control the judiciary and reduce its authority.

Singh also said the Emergency serves as a reminder that when those in power adopt authoritarian tendencies, it poses a serious threat to people’s lives, democratic institutions and constitutional values.

He added that the country remains indebted to all those who stood up against the injustices and excesses of the Emergency and protected democracy and the Constitution with courage.
