Tamil Nadu’s textile industry has urged the state government to avoid an increase in electricity tariffs, warning that higher power costs could weaken the sector’s competitiveness.
Industry representatives said the benefits expected from the India–UK trade agreement can be realised only if power tariffs are kept in check, as electricity is a major input cost for textile manufacturing.
They also highlighted Tamil Nadu’s significant role in the national textile ecosystem, noting that a sizable share of India’s textile production comes from the state.
The appeal comes amid discussions on boosting textile exports and encouraging value-added manufacturing, with the sector seeking policy support to sustain growth and expand overseas markets.
