Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has said the state will introduce a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), on the lines of measures followed in Gujarat, Assam and Uttarakhand.

Speaking to reporters, Adhikari said an announcement on the procedures would be made in the state Assembly. He added that a committee has been constituted to take the process forward.

According to the details cited, the UCC was introduced in West Bengal on May 25. The provisions include abolishing polygamy and making registration mandatory for live-in relationships.

The law aims to lay down common rules across religions on matters such as marriage, divorce and live-in arrangements. The BJP had also promised during election campaigning that a UCC would be brought in the state.
