Veteran Tamil filmmaker, actor, screenwriter and producer Bhagyaraj passed away in Chennai on Friday morning (June 27) after suffering a heart attack. He was 73.

According to reports, Bhagyaraj had returned to Chennai late on Thursday after attending the wedding of actress Khushbu’s daughter Avantika in Goa. On Friday morning, he went for his usual walk, complained of chest pain and was taken home by people nearby before being admitted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai.

Doctors attempted treatment, but he could not be saved. The sudden demise of the popular creator—known for family entertainers with distinctive storytelling and humour—has sent shockwaves through the Tamil film industry.

Chief Minister Vijay expressed deep condolences, calling Bhagyaraj a multi-talented figure who left a lasting mark through his films. The Chief Minister also announced that state honours would be accorded.

As per Bhagyaraj’s earlier wish, his eyes were donated after his death. His last rites are scheduled for June 28 at 1.30 pm at the electric crematorium in Besant Nagar, Chennai.
