DMK president M.K. Stalin’s remarks suggesting the party may not need alliances triggered swift political activity, with DMDK general secretary Premalatha holding an emergency meeting with him the same evening.

Stalin made the comments while speaking at a wedding function in Tiruvarur. He said that if any alliance partner chose to leave, he could not stop them, and added that the view that DMK does not need an alliance would be considered.

Following this, Premalatha met Stalin at his residence in Alwarpet, Chennai, along with DMDK MP Sudheesh. The meeting came hours after the statement that was widely read as a signal on the future of the alliance.

According to DMK sources, Premalatha told Stalin that DMDK wants to continue in the DMK-led alliance even if other parties, including the Congress, have exited and even if the MDMK were to leave. She also conveyed that she did not like Chief Minister Vijay’s Assembly remark referring to “missing father”.

The sources added that Premalatha said DMDK would take part in all protests that DMK plans against the TVK government.
