Chennai: MDMK general secretary Vaiko on Friday alleged that the DMK is circulating “baseless” allegations that he received Rs 50 crore from Chief Minister Vijay. Speaking after the MDMK general council meeting in Chennai, he said the charges were aimed at tarnishing him and his family.

Vaiko said the party had unanimously decided to exit the DMK-led alliance after the election results. He claimed the MDMK had stayed in the alliance for nine years to prevent the BJP from gaining dominance in Tamil Nadu, and added that he had praised the government and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin without criticising them.

He further alleged that a position had emerged after the results suggesting DMK support to enable an AIADMK government, calling it an “unprecedented political fraud” if true. Vaiko referred to reports of opposition within the AIADMK and said he understood that some leaders, including Kanimozhi, did not accept such a move.

Responding to allegations published in a DMK-supporting newspaper and remarks by a former MDMK deputy general secretary, Vaiko rejected claims about large-scale wealth and property purchases, including assertions about multiple apartments and assets in Chennai. He said he had sold ancestral properties and other assets over time and had publicly declared his assets earlier.

Vaiko said he was preparing to file a defamation case against the person who made the allegations, insisting they were made without evidence. He also announced that the MDMK would support TVK in the by-election and work towards an alliance with the party for local body elections.
