New Delhi: The BJP has criticised Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi after she wrote an article questioning the Centre’s foreign policy approach to the Israel–Gaza war.
In her piece published in a private English daily, Gandhi alleged that Israel was targeting Palestinian children and acting with “brutality”. She also said the Union government’s continued silence was morally indefensible and could not be justified in terms of national interest.
Gandhi further claimed that India had drifted away from friends in the Middle East, including Palestine and Iran, and that this had weakened diplomatic space, allowing Pakistan to step in.
Responding, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla accused the Congress of double standards, asking why the party speaks strongly on Gaza but remains silent on violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. He said the Congress was trying to turn even foreign policy into “vote-bank politics”.
Poonawalla said India had maintained a consistent position on Gaza, including voting at the UN and providing humanitarian assistance. He added that India’s foreign policy enables dialogue with all sides in global conflicts, allowing it to engage with both Palestine and Israel, as well as other rival blocs.
