New Delhi: The Delhi government has approved a fresh electric vehicle (EV) policy aimed at curbing air pollution in the capital. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the policy is set to come into force from July 1, subject to the Lieutenant Governor’s approval.

Under the plan, only electric auto-rickshaws will be registered from January 1. The government also announced that registrations for petrol and CNG-powered two-wheelers will be stopped from April 1, 2028.

As part of incentives in the first year, buyers of electric two-wheelers will receive a subsidy of Rs 30,000, while electric three-wheelers will get Rs 50,000. The policy will remain in effect until July 1, 2030, and will be implemented in phases over the next four years through a structured rollout plan.

The Delhi government said it will spend Rs 7,000 crore over four years to implement the policy, and invest an additional Rs 8,000 crore towards EV infrastructure and the removal of annual road taxes. The government estimates the public will receive benefits worth Rs 15,000 crore, including purchase incentives, support for scrapping old vehicles, and expansion of charging infrastructure.

Officials said Delhi has been facing severe air pollution for years, with vehicle emissions contributing around 23% of the pollution load. The EV policy, first introduced in August 2020 and which expired in August 2023, has now been extended with new measures.
