Durai Vaiko, the principal secretary of the MDMK, did not attend the party’s general council meeting held in Chennai.
Party leader Vaiko said Durai Vaiko was away in another town to meet a person who was unwell, and that this was the reason for his absence.
However, some party functionaries claimed the absence was linked to differences between father and son. They said Vaiko has been urging two MDMK MLAs—who won using the DMK’s ‘Rising Sun’ symbol—to resign.
According to these functionaries, the MLAs responded that if they were asked to step down, Durai Vaiko, who won as an MP in the DMK alliance, should also resign. They also alleged that Durai Vaiko took a pro-DMK position and stayed away from the general council amid the resignation dispute.
