New Delhi: A reshuffle of the Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected soon, according to BJP sources. The party is also said to be considering sending several ministers to organisational work and appointing new governors in multiple states.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance returned to power after the 2024 Lok Sabha election, with Modi taking oath as Prime Minister for a third term. With two years of the government’s tenure completed, the party leadership is reportedly weighing changes to inject “new energy” into key portfolios.

Speculation intensified after Prime Minister Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently met President Droupadi Murmu. Sources indicated that new faces could be brought into important responsibilities, some ministers may be shifted to party posts, and a few portfolios could be reassigned.

Among the possibilities being discussed are changes in the education ministry in the backdrop of the NEET question paper leak and issues related to digital marksheets for CBSE students. Sources also suggested that the petroleum ministry could see changes, and that BJP’s “one person, one post” principle may lead to some ministers who also hold state party leadership roles being dropped.

With assembly elections due next year in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab, representation from these states could increase in the Cabinet. BJP sources also said MPs from West Bengal may get a chance, and that dissatisfied MPs from parties such as Trinamool Congress, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction) and Aam Aadmi Party—who have expressed support to the Centre—could be accommodated. The reshuffle is expected before Parliament’s monsoon session, due to begin in the third week of next month, though final details may be known only after an official announcement.
