Seychelles President Patrick Herminie has conferred the island nation’s highest honour, the “Guardian of the Blue Horizon” award, on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The recognition was described as reflecting India’s growing global influence and its effective leadership on climate action.
According to the citation, the award acknowledges Modi’s steadfast commitment to environmental protection and his role in advancing the aspirations of small island nations.
PM Modi is the first leader to receive the “Guardian of the Blue Horizon” award. The honour was created only days earlier after the Seychelles government introduced reforms to its awards system.
As part of the changes, Seychelles scrapped its earlier set of national honours, including the Seychelles Republic award, and decided to institute the new award. The move followed controversies over transparency and the manner in which the previous top honour was granted, under which Seychelles presidents were automatically eligible.
The newly instituted award was then presented to PM Modi within days of its creation, the report said.
