Chennai: Newly appointed Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president and Virudhunagar MP Manickam Tagore has called on party leaders and workers to attend his assumption of office, saying the party must now work with renewed confidence to become stronger.

Tagore is set to take charge at 4 pm today at the party headquarters, Sathyamurthy Bhavan in Chennai. AICC in-charge for Tamil Nadu, Girish Chodankar, is expected to participate in the event.

In a video message, Tagore said he was being entrusted with the responsibility at a “historically important” time. He noted that after 59 years, the Congress now has two ministers, and said the party’s long-held goal of having a share in governance had been achieved.

He said the next objective is to make Rahul the Prime Minister, adding that 40 MPs should be elected from Tamil Nadu. Tagore also stressed the need to take a strong alliance to the people and appealed for support from leaders and cadres to build a strong Congress in the state.
