Chennai: Annamalai, founder of the organisation “We The Leaders”, said politics has changed and political parties must evolve accordingly, or risk facing decline.

He argued that politics should not be reduced to a contest for power. Pointing to the passage of time, he said today’s leaders—including himself—would eventually be replaced by younger, more capable and more motivated people.

Annamalai said his decision to leave the BJP was not taken out of personal ambition, but from a belief that Tamil Nadu needs a new political culture. He added that the decision was not sudden and that the thought had been forming for nearly two years.

He also said national parties, including the BJP, do not do politics centred on the people of Tamil Nadu. On the AIADMK, he claimed the party had failed to adapt to changing political realities.

Stating that he remained true to himself within the BJP, Annamalai said the party gave him an opportunity and he worked to the best of his ability as a cadre. He described himself as an Indian who is proud to be a Tamil, and said “We The Leaders” would be unlike traditional political organisations.
