Chennai has seen a renewed spurt in dangerous bike racing and “wheeling” stunts, after the menace had reportedly dipped for a period. The latest incident was reported from Adyar and Besant Nagar, where a group of youths rode more than five bikes late at night and allegedly carried out risky stunts that frightened other road users.
According to the report, the riders not only sped through the area but also dragged a metal road barricade (“barricade gate”) that had been placed by police for safety. The act, carried out even as a police patrol vehicle was in the vicinity, was described as creating a serious threat to the public.
Police have repeatedly warned that those involved in racing and stunts face vehicle seizure, cancellation of driving licences, registration of cases, fines, and arrest—especially if public property is damaged. Despite these warnings, such incidents are said to be recurring across several city roads, particularly during late-night and early-morning hours on weekends.
In the Adyar-Besant Nagar case, Shastri Nagar and Adyar police have registered a case and are examining CCTV footage to identify and nab the riders. Police also reiterated that strict action will be taken against anyone involved in similar violations.
Social activists, meanwhile, alleged that the resurgence is linked to lax enforcement and increased circulation of intoxicants. They urged the government and police to step up focused action, warning that such stunts could lead to accidents and loss of life.
