The Union Petroleum Ministry has announced that restrictions on diesel sales at public sector oil company fuel stations will be withdrawn from tomorrow.

The curbs were introduced after a conflict in West Asia in March triggered shortages of petrol, diesel and cooking gas cylinders in several countries. In India, even as supplies were under strain, panic buying led some people to purchase and stockpile fuel.

To prevent hoarding, the ministry had on June 12 directed PSU outlets to cap diesel sales, including a limit of not more than 200 litres per customer per vehicle per day.

In a letter sent to oil companies, the ministry said the Central government reviewed the current distribution situation of petroleum products and concluded that continuing the restrictions was no longer necessary in the public interest. Accordingly, the limits will be rolled back from tomorrow.
