Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has cancelled a tender floated to procure 60,000 tyres for state-run transport corporations, in a move that comes amid a series of procurement rollbacks.

Earlier, tenders to purchase 500 new buses for state transport corporations and 300 AC mini-buses for the Metropolitan Transport Corporation had also been cancelled. The tyre procurement tender has now been withdrawn as well.

Tamil Nadu operates 20,508 buses daily through eight state transport corporations. Spare parts such as tyres and gearboxes were typically procured once every six months, with tyre requirements alone running up to about 8,000 units per month.

Based on this demand, the tender to buy 60,000 tyres for a six-month period was issued in March. Transport corporation officials said there is adequate tyre stock to run services without disruption, and that a new tender will be issued in the next one or two months to procure tyres with improved specifications.
