Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has constituted a new committee to develop a fresh school curriculum for the state, appointing former ISRO scientist Mayilsamy Annadurai as its chairperson.

The move follows the state’s release of a State Education Policy last year, positioned as an alternative to the Union government’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Based on that policy, two committees had earlier been formed to design new curricula for school students.

The government has now cancelled the committee formed during the previous administration and issued orders creating a new body titled the “State Curriculum and Textbook Development” committee.

Apart from Annadurai, the panel includes 14 members, including Venkateshwaran from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) and University of Madras Registrar Rita John.

The Director of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has been named member-secretary. Directors from the School Education Department, Elementary Education Department, Directorate of Private Schools, and Directorate of Government Examinations have also been appointed as members.
