US President Donald Trump has confirmed that the United States and Iran will hold talks in Doha, Qatar, on June 30. In a social media post, Trump said the meeting was requested by Iran.

The announcement comes after a recently signed 14-point interim peace agreement between the two countries. Following the deal, Iran had agreed to allow international commercial shipping to move through the Strait of Hormuz.

Two days ago, the International Maritime Organization, with support from the US Navy, said it would expand the shipping corridor in the Strait of Hormuz near Oman to facilitate vessel movement.

However, tensions flared again when a cargo ship in the Hormuz region was attacked by Iran the day before yesterday. This was followed by missile strikes by the US on Iran and retaliatory missile attacks by Iran on US military bases in West Asian countries.

The report said both sides have now decided to stop attacks against each other and work toward resolving the shipping issue in the Strait of Hormuz, setting the stage for the Doha talks.
