The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on July 1 approved road infrastructure projects worth Rs 14,115 crore, according to details shared after the meeting.

In Uttar Pradesh, the Cabinet cleared a new highway project between Kanpur and Kabrai, estimated at Rs 7,145 crore. The plan includes a 4/6-lane corridor aimed at improving connectivity and supporting economic activity in areas such as Kanpur, Kadambur, Hamirpur and Kabrai.

The approved route is expected to connect onward through Lucknow, Kanpur, Kabrai, Sagar and Bhopal, and further towards Mumbai. Officials said the travel time from Kanpur, currently around 3.5 hours, is projected to come down to about 1.5 hours after completion.

In Delhi, the Cabinet approved a new 6-lane tunnel project costing about Rs 6,969 crore. The 8.1-km tunnel is planned to link the Dwarka Expressway with Nelson Mandela Marg in Vasant Kunj.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the approach is to build wider road infrastructure from the start so that future expansion becomes easier. He added that the Prime Minister has asked ministries to plan infrastructure with the goal of a developed India by 2047, with strong foundations to support later upgrades.
