The Madras High Court has cancelled the appointment of 17 assistants to High Court judges, after finding irregularities in the recruitment process.

The court took up the issue on its own and initiated proceedings over alleged procedural violations. A division bench comprising Justices S.M. Subramaniam and Senthilkumar passed the order setting aside the appointments.

In its order, the bench noted that candidates are provided time to meet prescribed qualifications: one year to clear the skill test, two years to clear the shorthand test, and up to two years to obtain eligibility as per the rules.

The court observed that if the required qualifications are not obtained, the direct recruitment method must be followed. It cautioned that making appointments without adhering to rules could send a wrong message to the public.
