Microsoft, headquartered in the United States, has decided to lay off 2.5% of its workforce, a move that would affect an estimated 5,500 employees.
The company has also indicated that employees who wish to opt for voluntary retirement may do so, according to the report.
Layoffs had continued last year as well. In two phases, Microsoft reportedly let go of 6,000 employees first and then 9,000 more, totalling about 4% of its overall workforce.
This year, the company is again planning a significant round of job cuts. Management is expected to communicate layoff notifications to employees over the coming weeks.
