A major road accident in Rajasthan left eight passengers dead after a bus rammed into a lorry and both vehicles caught fire, police said.

The crash occurred around 2.30 am as the bus was travelling at high speed towards Indore in Madhya Pradesh. The collision took place on the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway near Dausa, following which flames engulfed the bus and the lorry.

Passengers who noticed the fire tried to rush out in panic, but some were unable to escape and got trapped. Eight people were burnt to death in the blaze, while more than 20 others sustained injuries.

The injured have been admitted to hospital for treatment. Fire and rescue personnel battled the flames and brought the fire under control.

The exact cause of the accident is not yet known. Police suspect the bus driver may have dozed off, and said overspeeding could also have contributed to the crash.
