Chennai: The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has launched an internal inquiry into allegations that Human Resource Development Minister Sarathkumar used narcotics, following the circulation of a video said to be from an IPL match in Chennai in 2022.

Opposition parties have claimed the footage shows the minister using cocaine. Sarathkumar has denied the allegation, saying he was crushing a tablet to give to an unwell child. Unconvinced by the explanation, DMK members have taken to protests.

With the Budget session and by-elections in seven constituencies approaching, the controversy has added pressure on the government as more clips and commentary continue to spread on social media.

According to TVK sources, Chief Minister Vijay directed the party leadership to verify the authenticity of the incident and take action if warranted. Power Minister Nirmalkumar publicly confirmed that the party leadership is conducting the inquiry.

The sources said a committee comprising two MLAs and two district secretaries has questioned Sarathkumar and asked him to submit supporting evidence. They noted there were no photographs to show his child was at the stadium; the minister appeared with his family for the inquiry, swore on his child that he does not use drugs, and broke down in tears. The committee is also conducting discreet checks with his friends, and the minister’s position will be stripped if the allegation is proven, the sources added.
