The AIADMK’s women’s wing held an office-bearers’ consultation meeting at the party headquarters in Royapettah, Chennai, on Tuesday. The event was expected to draw around 400 functionaries, but fewer than 200 attended, leaving party general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami visibly disappointed.

During the meeting, the women’s wing adopted six resolutions highlighting issues including deterioration in law and order, alleged irregularities in the selection process for college assistant professors, and power cuts.

Addressing the gathering, Palaniswami said the AIADMK had won 47 seats in the Assembly election despite challenging circumstances. He alleged that the ruling DMK, which he said had benefited from alliance strength, was now “standing alone”, and claimed public dissatisfaction had grown over power outages and law-and-order concerns.

He urged party workers to perform strongly in upcoming by-elections and local body elections, expressing confidence of victory if the party worked effectively. Palaniswami also said he had decided that women would be given 50% of the party’s candidate opportunities in rural local body polls, municipal elections and the next general election.

Referring to internal exits, he said party workers were celebrating the departure of “traitors”, and added that as the AIADMK is a democratic movement, differences can arise but would be resolved.
