India’s first T20I against England at Chester-le-Street was abandoned due to rain after the visitors posted 189/7 in 20 overs.

After winning the toss, India captain Shreyas Iyer chose to bat. Vaibhav Suryavanshi was not picked in the XI, while spinners Varun Chakravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi returned to the side.

India’s innings began poorly as Sanju Samson was dismissed for a duck and Ishan Kishan was run out without scoring. Abhishek Sharma counter-attacked with a rapid half-century off 20 balls, while Iyer also found boundaries regularly.

Abhishek made 59 off 24 before falling lbw to Sam Curran. Iyer went on to score 68 before being dismissed by Saqib Mahmood, and Shivam Dube provided late momentum with an unbeaten 42 off 21 balls. With rain continuing to delay the start of England’s reply, officials eventually called off the match.
