A Union minister has come under sharp opposition attack after his wife, a practising lawyer, appeared in the Supreme Court in a case connected to the ministry he heads, according to a first-person account by a journalist.

The minister’s wife is described as a regular in the apex court, known for handling several important matters, including cases involving students, and for enjoying the respect of judges. However, the appearance in a ministry-linked case reportedly gave the opposition an opening.

Opposition MPs raised the issue in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, questioning how the minister’s spouse could represent a matter tied to his department. They alleged misuse of authority and claimed she was paid a large amount by the government side, leading to repeated disruptions that affected parliamentary proceedings for two days.

When the minister initially said he was unaware of which case his wife had appeared in, MPs mocked the claim, asking whether he did not know what was happening at home. The journalist’s account adds that the controversy also sparked tension within the couple’s household, with the wife asserting her professional independence and noting that her husband had been her junior in the legal profession.

The narrative further recounts an encounter in the Supreme Court corridors, where the wife expressed disappointment over what she saw as a gap between public talk of women’s freedom and private realities, and later sought to confront the MP who raised the matter.
