Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said India and Japan should “lead the world” on the path towards peace and stability, after holding talks with Japanese Prime Minister Takayachi in New Delhi.
Takayachi is on an official visit to India and met Modi in Delhi. Agreements were signed in the presence of the two leaders, following which they addressed the media.
Modi welcomed Takayachi on her first visit to India, describing her as Japan’s first woman prime minister and a leader with strong public influence. Referring to remarks he made at the recent G7 summit in France, Modi said mutual trust is a key asset in today’s complex global situation and added that India–Japan ties have been fully tested on that measure.
He said Japan has played an important role in India’s growth story and that the visit opens a new chapter in international cooperation. Modi noted that both countries are among the world’s five largest economies and reiterated their shared preference for a rules-based Indo-Pacific.
Takayachi said India and Japan, as major democracies and market economies, are pursuing initiatives aimed at ensuring a free, developed and rules-based Indo-Pacific. She added that these efforts are intended to bring peace, growth and stability to the wider region.
