Farmers have intensified protests against a check dam project on the Palaar river near Pottapatti and Soorapatti in Madurai district, citing fears of reduced downstream water flow and impacts on agriculture and groundwater.
The Palaar originates in the Karandhamalai region of Dindigul district and flows through Madurai, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts. With several check dams already built at various points, residents say water availability to downstream villages has already declined.
According to the report, the check dam—estimated at Rs 9.5 crore—was announced earlier by then Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, with tenders floated and work initiated before the election. After the new government led by Vijay took office, officials reportedly accelerated the work.
Farmers argue that the project could affect areas including Singampunari and Tiruppathur, and extend impacts up to Ramanathapuram district. They also allege the project is being pushed to benefit a private drinking water plant located about 100 metres from the proposed site.
TVK members have expressed concern that implementing a DMK-era plan could bring disrepute to the current government. They say they have conveyed their objections to the party leadership and the government, urging an immediate halt to the check dam works.
