A low-pressure area has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal due to an upper-air cyclonic circulation, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai said on Wednesday.
The system may intensify further over the next 2–3 days. The weather office has issued a heavy rain alert for parts of Tamil Nadu for the next two days.
For July 3, heavy rain is likely in the hilly areas of Coimbatore, Nilgiris and Theni. For July 4, heavy rain is likely in Coimbatore, Nilgiris and Kanniyakumari.
The RMC also said light to moderate rain is expected across Tamil Nadu from July 2 to July 8. Squally winds of 45–55 kmph may prevail over the central and southern Bay of Bengal, and fishermen have been advised not to venture into these areas.
