More than 10 councillors from the DMK in the Greater Chennai Corporation are reportedly preparing to switch to TVK, according to information circulating in political circles. The councillors are said to be holding talks with the party, seeking assurance that they will be allowed to contest again in the next urban local body elections.
The Chennai Corporation currently has 151 DMK councillors. The AIADMK, which had 15 councillors, has seen several members move to TVK amid internal party issues, with five councillors having already joined TVK so far.
Sources say a similar move is now being explored by DMK councillors as well. The discussions are reportedly focused on securing an opportunity to contest the upcoming civic polls under the TVK banner.
Some DMK councillors were quoted as saying they believe public support in Chennai has shifted towards TVK, raising doubts about their chances of winning if they contest again on the DMK ticket. They have therefore placed a demand that TVK should offer them candidature after they join.
TVK leaders have reportedly told them that a decision will be taken after consulting the party leadership. It is also claimed that councillors who have already joined TVK were assured they could contest on the party’s ticket, prompting more councillors to wait for a similar opportunity.
