The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) that sought directions to immediately start the Madurai AIIMS hospital at Thoppur and make it available for public use.

The petitioner, Ramesh of Madurai, told the court he had filed multiple PILs since 2018 seeking completion of the project within timelines earlier fixed by the court. He also referred to a 2025 hearing in which the Union government had stated that the first phase of construction would be completed by January 2026 and then handed over to the concerned authorities for use.

Claiming that no work had progressed so far, he alleged that funds were not earmarked for the Madurai AIIMS project in Union Budgets from 2018 to 2026 and sought action against officials for filing what he described as misleading replies and reports before the court.

Appearing for the Union government, the Deputy Solicitor General submitted that construction was underway and argued that the petition had been filed without proper verification. The bench of Justices C.V. Karthikeyan and R. Sakthivel observed that the petitioner had made a practice of filing repeated PILs on the same issue, noted that work was in progress, and held that no further directions could be issued at present, dismissing the petition.
