By-elections not announced for Tamil Nadu

The Election Commission has reportedly deferred the announcement of by-elections for seven vacant Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu. The seats have fallen vacant following a series of resignations by sitting MLAs.

According to the report, preparations were under way within the Commission to conduct by-elections for five constituencies, excluding Karur and Viralimalai. With the groundwork progressing, an announcement was widely expected at any time.

On Wednesday, the Commission announced that by-elections would be held on July 30 for three constituencies outside Tamil Nadu—Bankipur in Bihar, Datia in Madhya Pradesh, and Manjalpur in Gujarat. However, no similar notification was issued for the vacant Tamil Nadu seats.

The postponement is being linked to a court case filed over the resignations of AIADMK MLAs, the report said. In this context, the Commission is said to have held back the bypoll schedule for Tamil Nadu for now.
