Chennai: Uncertainty continues over who will serve as coordinator for the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led alliance, as partner parties have not yet arrived at a common view, according to reports.

After TVK formed the government following its Assembly election victory, several parties that were earlier part of the DMK-led front—including the Congress, VCK, CPI, CPM, MDMK and the Indian Union Muslim League—are said to have aligned with TVK.

TVK leader and Chief Minister Vijay met leaders of these parties at a star hotel in Kovalam near Chennai the day before yesterday. TVK described the event as a “meeting of friendly forces.” With the earlier DMK-led bloc having operated under the banner of a secular progressive alliance, discussions are now under way to adopt a new name for the regrouped front.

Multiple names are being considered, including “Social Justice Alliance for Tamil Nadu’s Victory,” the report said. At the same time, the selection of a coordinator has become a point of debate: MDMK is said to prefer its general secretary Vaiko on seniority grounds, while minister Aadhav Arjuna has reportedly suggested VCK leader Thirumavalavan as a symbol of social justice—an idea other leaders are said to be hesitant to accept.

The next alliance meeting is planned for the third week of this month. Efforts are under way to build consensus on both the alliance name and the coordinator before then, and there is also a plan to choose Chief Minister Vijay as the alliance leader.
