At the Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America (FeTNA) Tamil festival held in New Jersey, Annamalai, head of the organisation ‘We The Leaders’, urged the community to view Tamil identity in a broad and inclusive way.

Referring to Tamil presence across countries such as Malaysia and Singapore, he said Tamils are seen in every walk of life—from street-level traders to the highest offices. He cautioned against restricting the Tamil community within a “small circle” or defining it only through religious labels.

To underline his point, Annamalai cited the ancient Tamil work Purananuru, noting its enduring relevance over two millennia. He encouraged parents to have children read the 182nd poem, “Undalamma, Ivvulagam,” and spoke about the values it highlights.

He said the ideal Tamil should share even the best of what they have, avoid anger, and work fearlessly and tirelessly, ready to sacrifice for honour. He also stressed the importance of education and said efforts should be directed toward the welfare of others.

Calling for a stronger role for FeTNA in the years ahead, he said the organisation should serve as a bridge that brings everyone together and act as a voice for Tamils across the world.
