A deep low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday.

According to the IMD, the system formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas, later strengthening into a deep depression near the Odisha–West Bengal coastal belt before intensifying further.

The depression is likely to cross the north Odisha coast within the next 24 hours. The centre was located about 50 km southeast of Balasore and around 60 km southeast of Digha in West Bengal, the IMD bulletin said.

After landfall, it may move inland along north Odisha towards north Chhattisgarh, increasing the chances of rainfall in those regions.

For Tamil Nadu, the weather office indicated the possibility of moderate rain from July 5 to July 11, with light to moderate showers expected at a few places in Chennai today and tomorrow. Winds could reach up to 65 kmph over parts of the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, and fishermen have been advised not to venture into these areas. Heavy rain with thunder is expected in Coimbatore and the Nilgiris today.
