Chennai’s Triplicane police have arrested Krishna, the car driver of Tirunavukkarasu, in connection with a case alleging attempts to bargain with MLAs to topple the Thawega government.

Tirunavukkarasu (45), a resident of Arumbakkam, runs a survey firm named IPDTS. Police say allegations have been raised that he, along with Naresh (45) from Tiruchy and Thyagarajan (40) from Medavakkam, tried to lure Thawega MLAs through inducements.

The case was registered based on a complaint by Thawega MLA Ilaiyaraja from the Uthangarai constituency in Krishnagiri district. Following the complaint, Triplicane police arrested Tirunavukkarasu and others, taking the total number of accused held earlier to eight.

During follow-up inquiries, police said they found indications that DMK MLA Senthil Balaji from Coimbatore South, a former minister, and his brother Ashok Kumar were linked to the alleged plot. A lookout notice has been issued against Senthil Balaji, while Ashok Kumar has moved the Madras High Court seeking bail.

With Krishna’s arrest, the total number of arrests in the case has now increased to nine, and further questioning is under way.
