West Bengal is witnessing fresh political turbulence as the Trinamool Congress (TMC), linked to former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, is reported to be facing a serious internal split.

According to the report, out of the party’s total 80 MLAs, as many as 58 have joined a dissident group led by Rithabrata Banerjee. The development is being described as a major setback for the party’s unity.

The report also claims that the dissident camp is seeking recognition as the principal opposition in the state Assembly, adding a new dimension to the unfolding crisis.

With the numbers cited indicating a large-scale defection within the legislature party, the situation has intensified political uncertainty in the state.

Further details on the next steps by the party leadership and the Assembly are awaited.
