Washington: US President Donald Trump has claimed that many people seen crying at the funeral of Iran’s religious leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei may be putting on an act.
Khamenei was killed in a joint US–Israel military strike, according to the report. His funeral rites began yesterday.
In an interview to a media outlet, Trump said he was surprised to see large numbers of mourners in tears, adding that he had believed the public hated Khamenei. He suggested the emotion on display could be “fake tears.”
Trump also said that after Khamenei’s death, there were appeals for a nuclear agreement. He added that the United States and Iran have agreed to postpone negotiations for a week until the funeral concludes, and said no attacks would take place during that period.
