Hindu Makkal Katchi founder Arjun Sampath on Saturday said Chief Minister Vijay should not encourage a “culture of changing parties” and instead focus on bringing beneficial schemes to Tamil Nadu by working with the Union government.

Speaking after offering prayers at the Muthumariyamman temple in Karaikudi, Sampath said special prayers were held for what he described as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “good governance” to reflect in the state as well. He cited the increase in the number of days and wages under the 100-day employment scheme.

Referring to the Chief Minister’s participation in a drug-awareness run, he said youth could be brought out of addiction by shutting liquor outlets. He also called for permitting toddy tapping, stating it would benefit farmers, and alleged that Dravidian parties had created a belief that governance depends on liquor sales.

Sampath criticised Minister Nirmal Kumar for making strong remarks against the Governor, alleging that a confrontational approach was being promoted. He also said frequent resignations by MLAs within six months would amount to betraying voters.

He further urged the Chief Minister to greet Hindu festivals and treat all communities equally, without giving priority to any one group. On the Karur crowd-crush deaths, he said offering government jobs was not appropriate, and asked former DMK ministers facing corruption cases to face court and prove their innocence.
